European Hornbeam is a slow-growing deciduous tree that has multiple-trunks and a wide pyramidal habit when young that opens to oval with age. The serrated and heavily ribbed deep green foliage turns yellow in fall. Separate insignificant catkins bloom in early spring, and the female catkins give way to distinct clusters of winged nutlets. Prefers average well drained soils.
